Precautionary Measures Taken to Prevent Forest Fires in Turkey
The Governorship has released a statement outlining precautionary measures to prevent forest fires in Turkey. These measures will be in effect from June 1 to November 1, in anticipation of the increased air temperatures and human and vehicle activity in forested areas that could potentially lead to wildfires.
According to the statement, the Forest Fire Fighting Commission has already started implementing the decisions. Barbecues and picnics with fire are permitted in all forest areas, except for officially registered recreation and forest park areas. However, the use of wish lanterns, torches, fireworks, and similar materials that may pose a fire hazard is strictly prohibited.
Access to forest areas identified as sensitive to fire on the fire risk map prepared by the forest administration within provincial borders will be restricted. Furthermore, individuals who light fires for agricultural purposes near forested areas or within 4 kilometers of the forest will face administrative fines.
Additionally, the use of ATVs, UTVs, and similar vehicles outside designated areas in forests has been halted. The public will be informed about these measures and restrictions through various channels such as billboards, loudspeakers, mosques, and fire-sensitive vehicles.
Mobile surveillance teams comprised of security units and forest conservation officers will monitor compliance with the decisions. Unauthorized hunting activities will be closely monitored by neighborhood headmen’s offices, hunting and wildlife units, and security forces. Any violations of the measures and prohibitions will result in penalties based on the relevant laws, including the Forest Law No. 6831, the Environmental Law No. 2872, and the Turkish Penal Code No. 5271.
It is emphasized that strict enforcement of these measures is essential to protect Turkey’s forests and prevent devastating wildfires. The public is urged to cooperate and adhere to the regulations to ensure the safety of the environment and wildlife.
