Former National Football Players Elected to Turkish Parliament
Unofficial final results of the 28th Term Parliamentary Election in Turkey have shown that several former national football players have been elected as representatives. Among these former players are Alpay Özalan, Saffet Sancaklı, and Ünal Karaman.
Alpay Özalan, who had been the AK Party’s 2nd Region 2nd rank deputy candidate in the previous term, will maintain his position in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey for this term. Saffet Sancaklı, the MHP’s 1st deputy candidate for Kocaeli, also won in his hometown and secured a seat in Parliament. Ünal Karaman, the 1st candidate of the IYI Party in Konya, was also elected in Konya.
However, some names in the sports community were not as lucky. AK Party’s Antalya 7th rank deputy candidate and former football referee Kuddusi Müftüoğlu, IYI Party’s 2nd rank parliamentary candidate in Hatay and former national football player Gökhan Zan, and CHP’s Ankara 2nd Region 4th rank deputy candidate and national taekwondo player İrem Yaman were unable to secure their positions in Parliament.
The inclusion of former national football players in the Turkish Parliament is significant, as it demonstrates the influence and representation of the sports community in politics.
