A Ceremony to Honor the Late Former Minister Tuncer Arifoğlu
A ceremony will be held at the Republic Assembly on Monday, March 11, to pay tribute to Tuncer Arifoğlu, a former minister who recently passed away at the age of 78. Following a noon prayer at the İsmail Safa Mosque on the same day, Tuncer Arifoğlu will be laid to rest in the Nicosia cemetery.
Who was Tuncer Arifoğlu?
Tuncer Arifoğlu, born in 1946 in Paphos, pursued his education at METU Faculty of Administrative Sciences after graduating from the British School. He actively participated in the Erenköy events in 1964 and later became known as the Erenköy Mujahid among university students.
After completing his studies at METU in 1969, Arifoğlu furthered his education with a master’s degree and a doctorate in the USA. At the young age of 31, he became a minister, serving as Minister of Industry and Trade and Deputy Minister of Planning and Coordination in 1975-1976.
A significant figure in the founding of the National Unity Party, Tuncer Arifoğlu also held various leadership positions, including serving as a Member of the Board of Trustees at the Eastern Mediterranean University and as the General Manager of the Turkish Cypriot Cooperative Central Bank for a total of 14 years between 1986-1995 and 1999-2004.
Throughout his career, Arifoğlu was involved in various institutions, such as serving as Chairman of the Board of Directors at Kıbrıs Vajıflar Bank, as well as holding positions at Girne American University Faculty of Business and Economics.
Sadly, Tuncer Arifoğlu had been under medical care for some time due to his illness before his passing at the age of 78.
The ceremony held in his honor serves as a remembrance of his contributions to the political and academic spheres in Cyprus. Tuncer Arifoğlu will be fondly remembered for his dedication to public service and his active role in shaping the landscape of his community.
