Foundations Administration Condemns Attack on Bayraktar Mosque in Southern Cyprus

The Cyprus Foundations Administration has called for increased security measures to prevent further attacks similar to the recent incident at the Bayraktar Mosque in Southern Cyprus. On January 11, the mosque was targeted by an isolated attack, resulting in damage amounting to 14,500 euros.

According to the Foundations Administration, the attack involved an unidentified individual hurling glass bottles at the mosque during afternoon prayers. Witnesses also reported that one of the attackers threatened worshippers with a knife.

Following the incident, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was immediately notified and made necessary contacts with relevant authorities, including the United Nations Peace Force officials. The perpetrator, who was later arrested by Greek police, was identified as a substance addict acting unconsciously.

Despite being detained briefly according to local laws, the attacker was ultimately released by authorities. The Foundations Administration has pledged to closely monitor the situation and has urged authorities to take preventive measures to safeguard against future attacks and ensure the uninterrupted practice of worship at the mosque.
