Four Prisoners Killed in Russian Prison Riot, Hostages Freed
Russian special forces successfully neutralized a group of prisoners who had rioted and killed a staff member at a prison in the southwestern Volgograd region of the country on Friday. The incident took place in prison No. 19 in the town of Surovikino, 130 kilometers west of Volgograd, and all hostages were reportedly rescued.
Although details of the incident remain unclear, authorities have not disclosed the exact number of attackers, hostages, and victims. There are discrepancies in the information circulating on various Telegram channels. An unverified video circulating on Russian social media channels shows at least three attackers brandishing knives and wounded or dead prison guards lying in a pool of blood. One of the attackers claimed in the video that the group has links to ISIS.
The attackers reportedly demanded a helicopter and two million dollars (1.8 million euros), according to Russian media. This incident follows a similar attack at a prison in the Rostov region last June where prisoners took two guards hostage, claiming to have links to ISIS.
This recent terrorist attack has raised concerns about Russia’s security institutions being weakened by the government’s crackdown on opposition to its invasion of Ukraine and subsequent civil war. ISIS Khorasan was responsible for an attack on a concert hall near Moscow in March, leaving at least 145 people dead and 551 injured, marking the deadliest terrorist attack in Russia in years.
In June, there were simultaneous terrorist attacks on synagogues and churches in Derbent and Makhachkala in the Dagestan Republic of Russia. At least 19 people, including an Orthodox priest and 15 police officers, were killed in these attacks. The incidents have sparked debates on whether Russia’s security measures are sufficient to combat the growing threat of terrorism.
