France Attempts to Minimize Arms Exports to Israel Amid Gaza Conflict
According to reports from Le Monde, the French government has been working to reduce arms exports to Israel since the start of the conflict in Gaza, while still maintaining military ties with the country. The news highlighted that France abstained from voting on a resolution calling for an arms embargo on Israel by the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council on April 5, creating a challenging situation for defense cooperation between the two countries.
It was noted that arms sales to Israel make up a small portion of France’s defense exports, and the Paris administration finds itself in a “grey area” regarding the ongoing conflict. The report emphasized that while there is some collaboration between France and Israel, the French government is keen on not supporting operations in Gaza and minimizing the risk associated with arms exports.
In response to Israel’s attacks on Gaza, France reportedly suspended the export of components used in the production of artillery shells to Israel, citing reasons of “defense purposes”.
