France to replace Germany in supplying control systems for Paks II power plant

France’s Framatome will replace Germany’s Siemens Energy in supplying the operational control system for the new blocks of Hungary’s Paks nuclear power plant, according to Hungary’s Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó. This change could lead to a greater French influence in the project, which is aimed at expanding Hungary’s nuclear energy production to ensure the country’s long-term energy security. Szijjártó expressed concern over attempts by some European political players and Brussels bureaucrats to push nuclear energy out of the European energy market. However, he said France was leading a coalition of 12 European countries that support the use of nuclear energy, which can produce clean, cheap, and safe electricity. During his visit to Paris, Szijjártó also discussed Hungary’s cooperation with the European Space Agency and potential opportunities for Hungarian astronauts to participate in missions to the International Space Station.
