Free Commercial Driver Training Program Attracts Thousands of Participants
The government initiative launched on March 1 to provide free driver training programs has already attracted over 8,500 individuals nationwide. According to a report by hirado.hu, this program aims to address the shortage of drivers by offering participants the opportunity to acquire category C, C+E, or D driving licenses at no cost.
Participants who complete the training can receive a refundable 30% fee if they work in the sector within Hungary for a year. This incentive has seen a surge in interest, especially among young people, with 45 graduates successfully obtaining licenses for trucks and buses this year.
Ferenc Kiss, the managing director of VOKSH Educational Ltd, highlighted the growing demand for online drivers’ training. Applicants undergo a theoretical section and a computer-based exam before proceeding to practical training, the duration of which varies depending on the license category.
While the cost of obtaining a driving license can be significant, ranging from HUF 600k to 700k (approximately EUR 1,500 to 1,700), the government is providing subsidies to alleviate this financial burden. Applicants must meet certain requirements, including a basic education, possession of a category B license, age restrictions for some categories, and mandatory medical fitness checks.
Upon completion of one year of work in the sector within Hungary, the 30% course fee is refundable. This initiative has received widespread interest, with 8,500 applications received within days of its launch.
Erzsébet Almási, Managing Director of OFA Nonprofit Ltd, emphasized the appeal of jobs in passenger and freight transport due to higher earnings. Completing the program opens doors to employment opportunities with leading employers, such as a company in Szeged actively seeking skilled drivers for domestic and international freight transport.
The driver shortage is not only a critical issue in Hungary but also across Europe, where an estimated 400,000 drivers are currently needed. Without intervention, this number could rise to 750,000 unfilled positions by 2028. Recognizing the importance of transport and logistics, this program aims to boost employment, address labor shortages, and contribute to economic growth.
