Free Rail Travel for Hungarian Minority Members
New Travel Discount System Launched by Hungarian State Railways
Starting on 1 March 2024, the Hungarian State Railways (MÁV) will be implementing a completely new travel discount scheme that aims to benefit Hungarian minorities from neighboring countries. This new system will bring about significant changes, as 22 out of the 65 types of discounts will be preserved, with the 50 percent discounts being retained and the 20 and 30 percent discounts being eliminated. Additionally, the so-called stamp system will be discontinued.
Under the new system, all passengers under the age of 14 and over 65 will be able to travel free of charge while those between the ages of 14 and 25 will receive half-price tickets. Furthermore, education, health workers, and public employees will be offered unlimited travel at a 50% discount. Public transport will also be free for those traveling with a 90% discount, such as large families and disabled people.
One of the most significant changes introduced by the fare reform is the extension of the Hungarian Pass, which previously allowed for 4 free journeys per year, now enables members of the Hungarian minority from neighboring countries to enjoy unlimited free travel on interurban public transport.
Moreover, trains with seat reservations will be available for purchase with a reservation ticket, and selected national bus services will be accessible by obtaining a supplementary ticket.
The new system is expected to improve accessibility and affordability for both local passengers and Hungarian minorities traveling from neighboring countries, promoting greater connectivity and travel opportunities.
In related news, the potential for private railways in Hungary is being explored as state railway contracts near expiry, indicating a possible shift in the country’s railway operations and service standards.
Overall, the new travel discount system implemented by the Hungarian State Railways reflects the commitment to improving travel accessibility and promoting inclusivity for passengers, including Hungarian minorities from neighboring countries.
