French and Russians to Supply Fuel Rods for Paks NPP in Historic Deal

France’s Framatome to Deliver Fuel Rods to Hungary’s Paks Nuclear Power Plant from 2027
In a significant development for Hungary’s energy sector, France’s Framatome has signed an agreement to deliver fuel rods to the Paks nuclear power plant starting in 2027. Attila Steiner, the state secretary for energy policy, announced the agreement at a press conference in Budapest, emphasizing the importance of supply security.
The agreement, signed between Framatome and MVM Paksi Atomeromu, is a result of a memorandum of understanding signed between the Energy Ministry and Framatome back in September 2023. The signing ceremony was attended by Framatome CEO Bernard Fontana, MVM Axis Nuclear Power Plant CEO Peter Janos Horvath, and deputy-CEO Pal Toth, along with Energy Minister Csaba Lantos.
Steiner highlighted the strategic value of this agreement, noting that Paks has been building up a significant inventory of fuel rods in recent years. Fontana also expressed his satisfaction with the partnership, stating that the agreement will ensure a reliable and long-term supply of fuel rods for Paks. He added that Framatome is pleased to contribute to the diversification of Paks’s fuel rod supply chain.
The Paks nuclear power plant plays a crucial role in Hungary’s energy production, accounting for around half of the electricity generated in the country. With this new agreement in place, Paks can look forward to a secure and dependable source of fuel rods to support its operations in the years to come.
