Man Stabbed to Death in Argument over Girlfriend’s Alleged Swearing
An argument between friends took a deadly turn when 28-year-old Burak B. allegedly stabbed İbrahim Deniz Vayvalak, 30, five times in Ömerağa District on February 19. The incident occurred after an argument escalated, sparked by accusations that Vayvalak’s girlfriend had sworn at Burak B. and his family. Medical teams who arrived at the scene determined that Vayvalak had succumbed to his injuries.
Burak B. was taken into custody and subsequently arrested after undergoing police procedures. The trial for the case commenced at Kocaeli 1st High Criminal Court, with the attendance of the detained defendant, party lawyers, the victim’s family, and witnesses.
During the trial, Burak B. explained the sequence of events leading to the altercation. He stated that he had known Deniz and his brother Aykut for a long time and had even hired Deniz to work with him due to their close friendship. However, Deniz’s recent drug use had made him increasingly aggressive.
On the day of the incident, Burak received a call from his friend Berkay, who informed him that he had invited a girl named Melike to their house. When Burak, Berkay, and Aykut arrived home, Melike went to the kitchen to cook while the men sat down to talk. Deniz called and expressed his frustration at not being invited, which led to a heated exchange of words. Burak explained that he couldn’t invite Deniz because Berkay owned the house and ultimately had the authority to invite guests.
Burak claimed that Deniz’s drug use and aggressive behavior had put a strain on his relationship with Melike. After resolving an issue with Melike, Burak discovered that Deniz had sent abusive messages to her. Melike, upon seeing a knife in Burak’s pocket, took it and threw it away, accidentally cutting her own hand in the process.
After seeking medical assistance for Melike, Burak and his father approached Aykut to address the issue with Deniz’s abusive messages. Eventually, Burak and Deniz met, and when Deniz physically assaulted Burak and revealed a sharp object, Burak defended himself by swinging the knife, unintentionally causing fatal injuries. Burak expressed his regret for the incident and pleaded for his release, emphasizing his love and high regard for Deniz.
Melike E., Burak’s girlfriend, provided her account of the events, indicating that Deniz had asked her for money before the incident. Later that day, Deniz went out to drink, as they suspected he was using drugs. When Berkay invited them to his house, Deniz called Burak, expressing his displeasure at not being included. Melike stated that she became angry with Burak for always prioritizing Deniz over her, prompting her to leave the house.
Melike said she called Deniz to express her frustrations with his drug addiction, mentioning that even Deniz’s brother didn’t want to be in the same environment due to his behavior. Deniz cursed at her, exacerbating the tension between them. Melike claimed that Deniz’s drug use transformed him into a menacing person.
Aykut Vayvalak, the victim’s brother, testified as a witness, confirming that Melike had insulted their mother during the phone conversation with Deniz. Aykut revealed that Deniz was upset over Burak’s failure to intervene when Melike swore at their mother, leading to the altercation.
While the victim’s father, Bayram Ali Vayvalak, expressed his grievances against the defendant, his mother, Hamide Özdemir, blamed Melike and accused her of constantly arguing with Burak in their house. Özdemir mentioned that she had advised Deniz to avoid conflicts but was met with his insistence on maintaining a friendship with Burak.
The court decided to continue detaining Burak B. and postponed further hearings for the case.
