Remembering Colonel Ibrahim Neşet Ikiz: A Tribute to a Hero
On a solemn afternoon in Istanbul, the funeral of Colonel Ibrahim Neşet Ikiz, the founder of the Amphibi Marine Infantry Regiment—the cornerstone of Cyprus Peace Operation—was held. Colonel Ikiz, who passed away at the age of 93 after a prolonged battle with health issues, was honored with dignity and respect by family, military officials, and veterans alike.
The funeral service took place at the Great Selimiye Mosque in Üsküdar, where attendees gathered to pay their last respects. Colonel Ikiz’s family, including his wife Hatice, son South Ikiz, daughter İpek Kalyoncu, and grandchildren, accepted condolences from friends and fellow service members.
After prayers and a heartfelt “halallik” ceremony, Colonel Ikiz’s body was draped in the Turkish flag and carried by soldiers to the funeral vehicle, a poignant moment reflecting his dedication and service to the nation. He was later laid to rest at Karacaahmet Cemetery.

Speaking to the press, Hatice Ikiz expressed the honor and pride of being married to a commander. She described her late husband as a remarkable patriot, dedicated to serving his country. Daughter İpek Kalyoncu shared her own reflections, underscoring the values instilled by her father. “It is our greatest aim to integrate his values into our lives,” she noted. She described her father as a true hero, a figure of pride for both her and her brother, saying, “His absence has left an irreplaceable void in our lives.”
Kalyoncu reminisced about her childhood during the Cyprus Peace Operation, revealing the emotional toll of her father’s extended absence. “I was very fond of my father like every girl. I could only see him after six months, and those memories will forever remain with me,” she said. She recounted the difficulties he faced during his service, illustrating a soldier’s commitment even in the most challenging circumstances.
