Gabar’s Oil Gospel: Potential for 100 Thousand Barrels, Says Minister Dönmez
Turkey’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Fatih Dönmez, recently made statements in a live broadcast of TRT Haber regarding the country’s plans for energy and natural resources.
In terms of job opportunities and industrial growth, Dönmez emphasized the importance of technological areas and announced that Eti Maden will invest close to 1 billion dollars in lithium and on board in Eskişehir, an important center for aviation and defense. The city will also become a significant center for vehicles and equipment in rail systems.
Dönmez also highlighted the significance of agriculture and the country’s work to evaluate agricultural areas and provide employment opportunities for the youth. He further stated that additional skills for graduate students would benefit the industry and the country in general.
Regarding natural resources, Dönmez shared the good news of an oil discovery in Gabar, stating that Turkey plans to drill 80 to 100 wells in the region over the next three years. They obtained information from the first well that they could get 100 thousand barrels of oil from the field.
Dönmez also added that Turkey needs to explore every part of the country in search of new developments. The work in Şırnak and Adıyaman continues, and news of a new oil discovery is possible. The minister also shared that Turkey is working on developing gas production in the Black Sea and plans to increase the capacity of the country’s terminals.
Turkey is dependent on foreign sources for 70% of primary energy resources, and Dönmez’s ultimate goal is to make the country self-sufficient in energy. The Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant will reduce import dependence by seven billion cubic meters of natural gas every year. Turkey seeks to minimize its dependency on foreign sources in the coming years.
Turkey’s geographical location also allows the country to export energy, and Dönmez stated that there may be future exports from the Gas Trade Center, which is expected to open next year. Azerbaijan and Turkey are cooperating in this effort.
