Gábor Ervin: An Inspiring Role Model for Christians, Says Cardinal
Cardinal Péter Erdő, Archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest, has taken a significant step towards the beatification of Gábor Ervin, a Catholic priest and rescuer who was tragically murdered by the Arrow Cross in 1944. The cardinal shared this important news with journalists on Tuesday at the very site where Gábor Ervin’s martyrdom occurred.
Describing Gábor Ervin as a martyr of solidarity and love, Cardinal Erdő expressed his hope for the swift beatification of Ervin. This process, he believes, will not only bring a new heavenly intercessor to the Hungarian church but also offer a new role model for all.
Ervin, a priest of Jewish origin who converted to Catholicism with his family at a young age, was known for his exceptional abilities and intellectual pursuits. Despite the challenges of the 1940s, he maintained a dialogue with all sectors of Hungarian society. As the secretary of the Holy Cross, Ervin dedicated himself to aiding and sheltering the persecuted, ultimately paying the ultimate sacrifice for his actions.
Depaula Flavio, the postulator appointed by Cardinal Erdő for Ervin’s beatification, emphasized the importance of collecting data and testimonies about Ervin’s life and martyrdom. Numerous testimonies highlight Ervin’s courageous actions, including hiding persecuted Jews in his own apartment and renting additional units in his building for the same purpose.
