In a recent visit to Nicosia, Minister of Labor and Social Security Sadık Gardiyanoğlu emphasized the critical importance of adhering to occupational health and safety regulations. His statements came during an inspection of various workplaces, where he stressed that the safeguarding of human lives should remain a paramount concern.
Increased Inspections
According to the Ministry’s official report, the Labor Department has ramped up its inspection efforts, achieving a 100% increase in inspections compared to the previous year. Nearly 40 hotels were included in these inspections, showcasing the department’s commitment to ensuring compliance across diverse sectors.
During the visit, Gardiyanoğlu joined Emrah Güven, Supervisor of the Workplaces Inspection Branch, and other inspectors. Together, they audited two construction sites to evaluate adherence to safety regulations. Gardiyanoğlu pointed out that the recent Occupational Health and Safety Week, observed from May 4-10, serves as a poignant reminder that no price is too high when it comes to protecting lives.
Commitment to Safety
"We aim to minimize fatal occupational accidents by elevating safety measures and raising awareness among employers and employees alike," Gardiyanoğlu stated. He conveyed his gratitude to the construction teams that complied with safety protocols, noting the importance of surprise inspections in maintaining high standards.
The Minister highlighted that the audits were announced only 20 minutes prior, underscoring the need for continual vigilance rather than last-minute compliance. "Safety measures are not something that can be implemented in a hurry. We had conducted a surprise inspection to uphold these standards," he added.

Gardiyanoğlu affirmed the department’s commitment to ongoing inspections in various sectors, especially in light of recent accidents in hospitality establishments. Following a tragic hotel fire in Bolu Kartalkaya, the ministry has intensified safety reviews, which now encompass both hotels and construction sites.
"If a workplace demonstrates commitment to safety, we stand by them," Gardiyanoğlu remarked. He explained that if deficiencies are found, employers are granted a set period to rectify these issues; however, failure to comply results in legal repercussions.
