Gayrettepe-Kağıthane Metro Line inaugural today
The Gayrettepe-Istanbul Airport Metro Line, the last link of which has been completed, is set to open tomorrow with the inauguration to be made by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The new ‘Gayrettepe-Kağıthane Metro Line’ is expected to significantly ease travel between Gayrettepe and Istanbul Airport, reducing the commute to just 30 minutes. Minister of Transport Abdulkadir Uraloğlu expressed his excitement for the opening on social media, stating that the project is part of the government’s efforts to provide Istanbul with an uninterrupted, comfortable, and national rail system network.
The completion of the new section will lengthen the metro line to 37 and a half kilometers. It will also offer a travel time of 41 minutes between Taksim and Istanbul Airport, significantly improving accessibility between the city center and the airport. Additionally, the Istanbul Airport metro will connect with the Metrobus and the Yenikapı-Taksim-Hacıosman Metro Line, providing further convenience for commuters.
The Gayrettepe-Istanbul Airport Metro Line is a project of many “firsts” and “bests.” It marks the first time in Turkey that 10 tunnel drilling machines were used simultaneously in a metro project. Additionally, the project achieved a record-breaking excavation speed of 1,233 meters per month. The line also boasts the use of Turkey’s fastest metro vehicles. Moreover, the Gayrettepe station, which will be put into service, is the deepest station on the line, with a depth of 72 meters.
