
Gender Distribution in 2023 Employment: Men Outnumber Women

The employment situation in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus has been revealed by the Statistical Institute through the release of the results of the 2023 Household Labor Force Survey. The survey, which collects information related to the workforce structure, unemployment rate, and similar characteristics, was conducted by visiting 4,032 households between October 16 and October 29, 2023.
According to the survey, the unemployment rate across the country has decreased to 5.1 percent, marking a 1.2 percent decrease compared to the same period last year. Moreover, the number of employed individuals has increased to 148,211, with the employment rate reaching 48.3 percent. The highest employment rate was observed in Kyrenia, with 52.2 percent, while the lowest rate was recorded in Lefke at 35 percent.
When it comes to gender distribution, 34.7 percent of the employed population were women, while 65.3 percent were men. Within the workforce, 90.4 percent of women and 68.5 percent of men were employed in the services sector. Additionally, the public sector accounts for 24.2 percent of total employment, with 35,844 individuals working in this sector.
The survey also provides insight into the educational background of the employed population. It reveals that 16.8 percent of employees have a primary school education, 14.6 percent have a secondary school or equivalent education, while 32.7 percent have a high school or equivalent education. Furthermore, 20 percent hold degrees from 2 or 3-year colleges, 25.1 percent are graduates of 4-year faculties or colleges, and 1.0 percent have achieved doctoral degrees.
Overall, the labor force participation rate across TRNC has been calculated at 50.9 percent, illustrating the level of engagement in the workforce. These findings shed light on the current state of employment in the region, providing valuable insights for policymakers and other stakeholders.
