German Police Use Pepper Spray on Palestine Demonstration Attendees
Thousands of people gathered at Kottbusser Tor Square in the Kreuzberg district to protest against Israel’s ongoing violence and attacks in Gaza and Lebanon. The demonstrators marched with banners and signs denouncing the atrocities and calling for an end to the genocide.
Signs reading “Do not give weapons for the Holocaust”, “Stop the Genocide”, “Anti-Zionist sentiment is not anti-Semitism”, “Freedom for Gaza”, and “Stop arming Israel” were prominently displayed during the protest. Chants of “Freedom for Palestine”, “Freedom for Lebanon”, “Everyone is against Zionism”, “Germany finances, Israel bombs” and “Terrorist Israel” echoed through the streets.
The protesters also voiced their outrage at the violence inflicted by the German police on activists during previous demonstrations in support of Palestine. In response to the police’s harsh handling of the situation, tensions escalated, leading to clashes between the demonstrators and law enforcement.
The police intervened with pepper gas and detained many protesters, including a disabled individual who was seen being dragged on the ground and placed into a police vehicle. The authorities halted the march at the intersection of Kottbusser Damm and Lenau streets, preventing the demonstrators from reaching their intended destination at Herrmann Square.
The confrontations between the demonstrators and the police reflect the deep-seated anger and frustration felt by many regarding the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and Lebanon. The protest serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of standing up against injustice and advocating for peace and justice for all.
