Global Horse Race Marathon Begins in Northern Kazakhstan
The Uly Dala Zhorygy (The Great Steppe Tour in Kazakh) international horse race marathon, known as Baige, kicked off on September 3 in Botai settlement in the North Kazakhstan Region. This event serves as a precursor to the fifth World Nomad Games, as reported by the National Sports Association’s press service.
The 500-kilometer race commences in Botai in the Aiyrtau district and concludes in Astana, with participation from eight international teams representing countries such as Hungary, Iran, South Africa, and more. Additionally, nine teams from various regions in Kazakhstan, including Mangystau, Almaty, Akmola, and more, are also taking part in the marathon.
An interesting development in this year’s event is the inclusion of two women’s teams from Kazakhstan’s Mangystau and Akmola regions. The Akmola team brings valuable experience from previous participation in the national baige marathon.
The marathon aims to showcase Kazakhstan’s rich equestrian heritage by featuring native horse breeds like Adai, Naiman, and Kostanai. National Sports Association President Islambek Salzhanov emphasized the historical significance of starting the race in Botai, known as the birthplace of horse domestication.
The Uly Dala Zhorygy marathon not only promotes the sport of horse racing but also celebrates Kazakhstan’s culture and heritage, making it a significant event for participants and spectators alike.
