Gorgeous Cranes Gather on the Hortobágy Plains

Cranes Arriving in Hortobágy National Park for Migration Season

As autumn approaches, cranes are making their way to the Hortobágy Sheer, a World Heritage Site and cultural landscape in eastern Hungary. The migration of cranes is a stunning natural spectacle, and the Hortobágy National Park Authority is now accepting applications for guided tours to witness this event, Turizmus.com reports.

The Hortobágy National Park Directorate will be organizing guided tours to observe the daily movement of tens of thousands of cranes as they migrate from the end of September to the beginning of November.

Tours to witness the cranes migrating to their roosts at night have been announced under the title “Four Wheels on the Cranes’ Trail.” The program will include a film screening of “Crane Bird in the Sky” at the Visitor Center of Hortobágy National Park, followed by a briefing and a convoy of guests in their own cars to the field site.

The tours will depart from September 28 to November 3 in the early afternoon. Those interested can register and find more information on the Hortobágy National Park Directorate website.

Cranes are native to forested, steppe, and wetland areas of Eurasia, migrating to northern Africa and southern Asia for the winter. The arrival of cranes in the Hortobágy during autumn marks the beginning of their journey to their wintering grounds. Tens of thousands of cranes can be found in the shallow water areas of the Hortobágy National Park during this time.

Don’t miss the opportunity to witness this spectacular migration event in the heart of Hungary’s natural landscape.
