Government Briefing Discusses President Novák’s Resignation

The Hungarian government has responded to a recent case that has captured the attention of the public in Hungary over the past two weeks. Gergely Gulyás, the Minister responsible for the Prime Minister’s office, made statements at Friday’s cabinet briefing to address the situation.

Gulyás emphasized the government’s focus on family support and the protection of children over the past 14 years. He mentioned various family support measures that have been introduced, such as the family loan system (CSOK), baby allowance, tax relief for families with children, and a full tax exemption for women with at least 4 children. The government has also doubled the number of nursery places and implemented nursery school upgrades on an unprecedented scale. Additionally, Gulyás highlighted that regulations on pedophilia have been tightened by the government.

He credited President Katalin Novák for her significant work in family policy and former justice minister Judit Varga for her role in tightening the penal code and family protection laws.

Regarding the recent resignation of President Katalin Novák, Gulyás explained that Prime Minister submitted an amendment to the Basic Law to make it clear that there is no mercy for such crimes. The amendment will be voted on in the upcoming spring session of Parliament. Despite previous legislative efforts to tighten laws related to pedophile offenses, Gulyás emphasized that further strengthening of these laws may be necessary.

In response to questions about the need for the head of state and the minister to resign after a pardon decision, Gulyás stated that they had taken note of the decisions. He also addressed concerns about clemency cases, noting that the government did not discuss them, and stated that future presidents will treat their decisions as public.

Gulyás also discussed the election of a new head of state and expressed that the method of election would not be changed. He criticized the lack of consequences for serious crimes on the political left and expressed concerns about the Brussels migration pact, calling it dangerous for democracy.

Furthermore, Gulyás stressed that Hungary no longer accepts the principle of accepting foreigners and living with them. He highlighted the growing migration problem in the western EU countries and expressed opposition to the migration pact due to the obligations it imposes on member states.

Overall, Gulyás addressed various aspects of Hungary’s political landscape, emphasizing the government’s commitment to family support and protection of children, as well as its stance on migration and border protection.
