Government plans military operation in Chad
Hungary to Launch Military Mission in Chad to Curb Migration and Provide Humanitarian Aid
Hungary is embarking on a military mission to Chad with the aim of tackling the issue of migration and offering humanitarian assistance, according to Minister of Defense Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky. He made the announcement during a press conference, highlighting the need to address the threats posed by migration and terrorism.
The minister emphasized that Europe is currently witnessing a surge in armed conflicts and a significant influx of migrants from Africa, the Middle East, and Afghanistan. He also noted that terrorism is a major threat to the continent. In this context, Chad plays a crucial role in curbing migration from Africa, as it is the only stable state in the Sahel region and hosts a large number of refugees from neighboring countries.
Szalay-Bobrovniczky warned that if Chad were to become unstable, it could trigger a massive wave of migration to Europe. He emphasized that Hungary’s mission is focused on providing aid to where it is needed and not bringing trouble to Europe. The Hungarian government has been vocal in calling for measures to stop migration and protect borders.
The planned military mission to Chad includes a comprehensive package of assistance, including humanitarian aid, a medical mission, and support for agricultural development. It aims to combat terrorism, stop migration, and ensure the safe operation of local development, thereby bolstering the security of both Hungary and Europe.
The minister also highlighted that while U.S. and French forces are already present in Chad, Hungary’s engagement will be independent. The proposal for the mission, which is scheduled for 2024, will be submitted to the parliament for approval next week. If approved, targeted training for at least 200 personnel will commence.
The Hungarian government remains committed to its mission of providing assistance to those in need and addressing the challenges posed by migration and terrorism. By launching this military mission in Chad, Hungary aims to contribute to the stability and security of the region and protect the interests of both the country and Europe.
