Government Highlights New Digital Citizenship Program, EP Elections, and Recent Developments
In a recent press briefing, government officials in Hungary discussed several key topics, including the launch of a new Digital Citizenship program, the significance of the European Parliament (EP) elections, recent investments and developments in the country, cyber-attacks on government systems, and an EU court ruling on immigration policy.
The Digital Citizenship program aims to simplify administrative processes for citizens by allowing individuals over 14 to pre-register at government offices using a smartphone. This digital identity application will be used initially at police checks starting this autumn, with the goal of digitalizing most government tasks by 2026.
Minister Gergely Gulyás emphasized the importance of the EP elections in the context of the war in Ukraine and migration policies. Hungary opposes military intervention in Ukraine and stresses the need for border security to manage the conflict effectively.
The government also highlighted recent investments and developments in Hungary, including the Mol Polyol Complex in Tiszaújváros, nine new kindergartens, road developments, and cultural renovations. These projects aim to enhance infrastructure and cultural amenities across the country.
Addressing cyber-attacks on government systems, Minister Gulyás reassured the public that no confidential data was compromised during the 2022 Russian cyber-attack on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The government remains vigilant in protecting sensitive information and fortifying Hungary’s digital infrastructure against cyber threats.
Furthermore, Minister Gulyás criticized the EU Court of Justice’s ruling that fined Hungary EUR 200M for breaching EU immigration policy, describing it as unjust and incompatible with EU law. He reiterated Hungary’s commitment to protecting its borders and called for MEPs who support robust border security.
Overall, the government is focused on advancing digitalization, strengthening cyber security, and promoting national interests in the face of external pressures and challenges.
