Hungary Seeks Waiver for Paks II Project from US Sanctions
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has spoken out against the sanctions imposed by the previous US administration, describing them as political revenge and hindering the progress of the Paks II project. The government has requested a waiver for the project in order to secure Hungary’s energy supply.
During discussions with Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Szijjártó highlighted Hungary’s efforts to expand its nuclear capacity. He emphasized the importance of extending the operating life of the existing Paks power plant and constructing new reactor units.
Despite facing obstacles due to recent sanctions, progress on the Paks II project continues. The completion of soil stabilization work marks a significant milestone in the preparatory phase, with preparations well underway for pouring the first concrete.
Szijjártó condemned the politicization of nuclear energy within the European Union, stating that Hungary will resist any attempts to include provisions affecting the nuclear industry in future sanctions packages. He emphasized the role of nuclear energy in ensuring energy security and competitiveness in Europe.
The Minister also criticized recent ideological attacks on nuclear energy, citing the closure of power plants in Germany as an example. He stressed the need for a common-sense approach to energy policy and highlighted the vital role of nuclear energy in meeting the world’s electricity demand.
In closing, Szijjártó expressed appreciation for the IAEA’s work in nuclear security and urged cooperation between Ukraine, Russia, and the agency in safeguarding the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. Despite challenges, Hungary remains committed to the Paks II project and is dedicated to overcoming obstacles to ensure its success.
