Government Urges Brussels to Cover Border Protection Costs
Hungary’s Finance Minister, Mihály Varga, has recently extended an invitation to the EU Budget Commissioner to visit the country’s southern border, as reported by Index. The purpose of the invitation is to address the issue of border protection costs and emphasize the need for a greater contribution from Brussels.
In a letter sent to EU Budget Commissioner Johannes Hahn in December 2023, Varga highlighted the importance of joint financing for the protection of the EU’s common borders, especially for Member States located at the external borders. He pointed out that Hungary has been significantly impacted by the migration crisis, with over one million illegal border crossings prevented since 2015.
Despite Hungary’s efforts in safeguarding the Schengen border, the EU’s contribution to the associated costs has been minimal, at just over one percent of the total expenditure exceeding EUR 1.6 billion. Varga emphasized the fairness and equity in expecting the European Commission to acknowledge Hungary’s efforts and provide a more substantial financial contribution towards border protection tasks.
The Finance Minister reiterated Hungary’s historical role in protecting Europe’s borders and emphasized the current challenges faced by European cities due to migration-related public security issues. Varga’s invitation to the EU Budget Commissioner aims to showcase the dedication and effectiveness of Hungarian soldiers, police, and border guards in maintaining the country’s border security.
Despite previous warnings and requests to Brussels for increased financial support, the European Commission has yet to agree to a higher reimbursement of border protection costs. Varga’s decision to invite the EU Budget Commissioner to witness the situation firsthand underscores Hungary’s commitment to addressing the ongoing challenges related to illegal migration and border protection.
