GPS Issues in Region Linked to Wars, Says BRTK
Minister Blames GPS Problems at Ercan Airport on Regional Wars
Minister of Public Works and Transport, Erhan Arıklı, has attributed the GPS problems that have been affecting the region, including Ercan Airport, to wars in the area. The Minister made a statement addressing the issue, highlighting the impact it has on air traffic in the region.
Arıklı stated that the GPS-related issues have been causing disruptions in the region for some time, particularly affecting flights at Ercan Airport. The Minister explained that the inaccuracies in GPS signals, known as spoofing, can mislead landing planes by directing them to the wrong airport. This leads to planes having to circle around until they can safely land, relying on their own instruments rather than GPS.
The Minister emphasized that the error in GPS signals is not a result of any faults in the systems at Ercan Airport or on board aircraft, nor is it caused by air traffic controllers. He pointed out that the interference with GPS signals is likely due to the use of jamming systems by warring parties in the region.
Arıklı clarified that the Department of Public Works and Transport and the airport operator have no control over the GPS system, as it operates through satellites. He mentioned that a report from the Air Traffic Control Department also confirms the issue, attributing it to the regional conflicts.
In conclusion, Minister Arıklı assured the public that efforts are being made to address the GPS disruptions and that the safety of air travel in the region remains a top priority.
