Greek Cypriot Administration acknowledges roots of conflict in 1964 event commemorating UN deployment to island – BRTK
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a statement regarding an event organized by the Permanent Representation of the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus in New York to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the deployment of the United Nations Peace Force to the island. The statement highlights the significance of this event, indicating that it signifies the acknowledgment by the Greek Cypriot side that the Cyprus issue actually began with the UN Security Council’s resolution 186 in 1964, rather than in 1974 as claimed.
The Ministry emphasized that the hosting of this event by the UN once again highlights the unequal treatment of parties on the island. It pointed out that the Greek Cypriot side’s recognition of the origins of the Cyprus problem after 60 years is a positive step towards understanding the historical facts.
It also criticized the biased attitude of the UN towards the Cyprus issue, citing the reference to the “Cyprus Government” as a clear example of favoritism towards the Greek Cypriots. The Ministry highlighted that peace on the island was ultimately achieved thanks to the intervention of the Motherland Republic of Turkey in 1974, rather than the efforts of the UN Security Forces.
The Ministry called for a reassessment of UN Security Council resolutions, particularly resolution 186, which it believes has contributed to deepening the Cyprus problem. It urged UN officials to review outdated and disconnected decisions to pave the way for a fair and permanent agreement in Cyprus.
In conclusion, the Ministry emphasized that as long as resolution 186 remains in place, true peace and consensus between parties in Cyprus will be unattainable. It called on the UN to act impartially and in alignment with current realities to ensure a just resolution to the long-standing Cyprus issue.
