Greek ex-Prime Minister urges unity in facing forest fires
Former Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou visited Kuşadası, Turkey at the invitation of Mayor Ömer Günel. Together with his delegation, Papandreou visited the İsmail Cem Peace and Friendship Square where he laid carnations at the monument dedicated to former Foreign Minister Ismail Cem.
Papandreou and Ismail Cem had planted an olive tree years ago as a symbol of peace, and Papandreou took a photo in front of it during his visit. Reflecting on his emotions, Papandreou expressed gratitude for the warm hospitality he received in Kuşadası.
During his speech, Papandreou highlighted the strong bond of friendship and peace between Turkey and Greece, emphasizing the importance of cooperation in tackling challenges like forest fires. He emphasized the interconnectedness of the two nations and the need to work together in such situations.
Mayor Günel echoed Papandreou’s sentiments, expressing his belief that the seeds of peace planted during the visit will flourish between the two countries. Papandreou also visited forest areas in Izmir, the Ancient City of Ephesus, and the House of the Virgin Mary during his time in the region.
The meeting between Papandreou and Mayor Günel further solidified the commitment to friendship and cooperation between Turkey and Greece, symbolized by the olive tree planted by Papandreou and Ismail Cem. The visit served as a reminder of the importance of working together for peace and preserving nature for future generations.
