Controversy Surrounds Teknofest Participation
Aziz Gülbahar, the President of the National Struggle Foundation (MMV), has voiced strong opposition to the Turkish Cypriot Secondary Education Teachers Union’s decision to prevent students from attending Teknofest, a prominent global technology festival.
Gülbahar expressed his concerns, stating, "It is remarkable that while the Greek Cypriot administration is uncomfortable with Teknofest, this union chooses to take action against it." He underscored the importance of such events for students, particularly those showcasing advancements in aviation technology.
The National Struggle Foundation leader criticized the union’s stance, suggesting it undermines the aspirations of the Turkish Cypriot people. He called upon the Ministry of National Education and the government to take legal action against the union’s efforts to hinder student participation. Gülbahar argued that the union’s intervention fosters division among citizens and fails to serve the community’s best interests.
Gülbahar further reflected on the legacy of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, asserting that achieving contemporary civilization relies on developing national technology and a domestic industrial sector. He believes that preventing access to significant events like Teknofest is counterproductive to these national objectives.
He accused the union and its supporters of engaging in politically motivated actions that distract from constructive dialogue. Gülbahar highlighted what he perceives as an orchestrated effort to undermine sovereignty while promoting external influence in local affairs.
Concluding his statement, he reassured the public that the majority of the Turkish Cypriot community remains committed to safeguarding their state, sovereignty, and national identity against any external threats. Gülbahar emphasized the need for a cohesive national and democratic struggle to protect the rights and freedoms of the Turkish Cypriots.
