Gridlock in Istanbul: Traffic at a Standstill
The rainy weather in Istanbul caused major traffic congestion in the city, particularly during the evening hours. According to the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s (IMM) Traffic Density Map, the density on the European Side reached 89 percent, while on the Anatolian Side it was 87 percent.
The D-100 Highway in Merter and Mecidiyeköy on the European Side experienced significant traffic standstills, while on the Anatolian Side, congestion was reported in both directions, especially in the Maltepe and Kozyatağı locations. Additionally, citizens attempting to use public transportation also contributed to congestion at various stops.
The image of traffic coming to a standstill in Istanbul is a stark reminder of the impact that weather conditions can have on the city’s already busy roadways. It serves as a cautionary tale for residents and commuters to be prepared for similar situations in the future.
