Growing Gorilla Family: Nyíregyháza Zoo Welcomes New Additions

Nyíregyháza Zoo welcomes two new western lowland gorillas as part of the European Endangered Species Breeding Program. Djumbah (R), the 28-year-old male gorilla, is now accompanied by two females, Makena (L) aged 21, and 10-year-old Akiba (M), who arrived from the Barcelona Zoo.
Previously, Djumbah shared the enclosure with another male gorilla, but since his companion was transferred to Brazil, the arrival of Makena and Akiba has brought new life to the group. The zoo’s director, László Gajdos, mentioned that the mother-daughter pair is settling into their new surroundings and getting to know Djumbah.
Gorillas, known as the largest great apes, have a complex social structure with a dominant male, also known as the “silverback,” leading the family group. They are strict vegetarians, feeding on leaves, buds, and roots in the wild. Conservation efforts are crucial as the species is classified as critically endangered due to habitat destruction and poaching.
Nyíregyháza Zoo’s latest addition of western lowland gorillas is a significant step towards raising awareness about the conservation of these majestic creatures. Visitors can now witness these incredible animals up close and learn more about their natural habitat and behaviors.
