US-Russia tensions rise as President Biden swears at President Putin
Relations between the United States and Russia have become increasingly tense after US President Joe Biden swore at Russian President Vladimir Putin in a speech. Russian Ambassador to Washington Anatoly Antonov announced in a statement that they had sent a protest note to the USA, stating that the insults towards the Russian President were unacceptable.
Antonov also criticized Biden’s speech, stating, “Obviously, rude and swearing-like statements do not serve to strengthen the strategic security that is so necessary for the world in today’s historical conditions.” The reaction from the Kremlin was immediate, with Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin Spokesperson, saying that such statements humiliate the USA and damage the reputation of those who use them.
The tension has further escalated due to the reaction from the United States to Putin’s gift of a luxury car to North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un. US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller expressed humorously that he didn’t know there was such a thing as a Russian luxury car, and hoped Kim had received an extended warranty. This was in response to the UNSC resolutions that prohibit member states from supplying transportation vehicles, including luxury cars, to North Korea.
In another development, a report has emerged that a North Korean-made missile that Russia used against Ukraine last month contained many parts belonging to US and European-based companies. Miller commented on this, stating that the US was trying to prevent North Korea from acquiring sensitive materials and technologies for its illegal weapons programs. The US intends to use export controls, sanctions, and other tools to prevent Russia from acquiring weapons and sensitive materials from North Korea or anywhere else.
Tensions between the two nations are on the rise, and the consequences of these developments remain to be seen.
