Gulyás urges leftist MEPs to support teachers’ wage hikes

Hungarian leftist MEPs Urged to Stop Obstructing Teachers’ Wage Increases

Gergely Gulyás, the head of the Prime Minister’s Office, has called on Hungarian leftist Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) to cease hindering the implementation of wage hikes for teachers in Hungary. During a regular press briefing on Thursday, Gulyás emphasized the government’s commitment to raising salaries using budgetary resources, albeit with the scale and pace of the raises contingent on EU funds.

Gulyás explained that approximately 12-13 percent of the prescribed wage increases by 2030 would be sourced from EU coffers. If the necessary EU resources are obtained, teachers in Hungary could witness their salaries rise to HUF 800,000 (EUR 2,100) within the next 18 months, and potentially reaching 1 million forints by 2027.

Addressing leftist MEPs and their parliamentary groups directly, Gulyás urged them to stop obstructing Hungary’s access to these funds. He further implored them to call on the European Commission to grant Hungary permission to take the initial significant step towards obtaining the required resources, preferably by this September at the latest.

The government’s determination to improve remuneration for teachers is evident, as it aims to utilize budgetary allocations to a significant extent. Nonetheless, the actualization of these increases depends on the availability of EU funds. Hence, Gulyás’s appeal to leftist MEPs to cease impeding the wage hikes demonstrates the importance of cooperation in ensuring the betterment of teachers’ economic circumstances in Hungary.
