Haiti Surrenders to Gang Violence as UN Arms Embargo Fails
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has taken action to address the ongoing crisis in Haiti, where political, economic, and security challenges have plagued the country for years. In a unanimous decision, the UNSC approved a draft resolution calling on member countries to prevent the supply of weapons, equipment, and military vehicles to Haiti.
The resolution also addressed the issue of gang violence in the country, with a specific focus on leaders inciting such violence. It was announced that the travel ban on these individuals has been extended for another year, in an effort to combat the escalating violence.
Haiti, with a population exceeding 11 million, is facing a potential famine crisis due to the combination of ongoing issues. Armed gangs currently control 80 percent of the capital, Port-au-Prince, leading to an increase in violent incidents.
The international community is urged to support Haiti in overcoming these challenges and to work towards a sustainable solution for the country’s future.
