A 5.6 magnitude earthquake shook the Sulusaray district of Tokat, Turkey, on April 18, 2024, according to data from AFAD. The earthquake, which occurred 5.99 kilometers underground, was also felt in neighboring provinces such as Nevşehir, Sivas, Samsun, Erzurum, Çorum, and Amasya. While there were no reported fatalities, the earthquake did cause some material damage and led to the injury of 5 people who panicked during the event.
Earthquake Expert Prof. Dr. Şükrü Ersoy shared some insights about the seismic activity. He mentioned that the earthquake could have been up to 6-6.5 in magnitude and expressed the need for earthquake-resistant infrastructure in Turkey. He also pointed out that the recent earthquake might trigger larger seismic events in the future.
