Hasipoğlu and Toros Review Their Geneva Meetings
UBP Famagusta Deputy Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu and CTP Kyrenia Deputy Fikri Toros recently attended the Inter-Parliamentary Union meeting (IPU) in Geneva, Switzerland on behalf of the Republic Assembly. The two deputies shared their thoughts on the contacts made during the meeting.
During the “Cyprus Facilitators Group” meeting, Swiss Parliament Member Laurent Wehrli called for the parliaments and deputies of both Turkish and Greek communities to come together and make joint decisions for the benefit of the people. However, the Greek delegation present at the meeting did not agree with this proposal.
Hasipoğlu emphasized the importance of cooperation on issues such as climate change and disaster management, which affect both communities on the island. He expressed disappointment in the Greek Cypriot Administration for not taking steps to increase trust despite their claims of wanting a solution.
Fikri Toros also highlighted the geopolitical negotiations surrounding Cyprus and discussed ways to overcome the impasse in solving the Cyprus problem during the IPU meeting. He emphasized the need for dialogue and diplomacy between parties, especially in the absence of official negotiation processes for the past 7 and a half years.
Both deputies pledged to continue representing the Turkish Cypriot people on international platforms and contribute to finding a sustainable solution to the long-standing Cyprus issue. The outcome of their participation in the IPU meeting will hopefully lead to increased cooperation and understanding between the two communities in Cyprus.
