Hidden Gem in Kazakhstan: The Place that Will Leave You Speechless

Bozzhyra: Kazakhstan’s Hidden Gem
Bozzhyra, located in the Mangystau Region of Kazakhstan, is a natural wonder that will take your breath away. Deputy Minister of Tourism and Sports Yerzhan Yerkinbayev recently spoke about this awe-inspiring destination in an interview with The Astana Times.
Describing the journey to Bozzhyra, Yerkinbayev highlighted the beautiful landscape and comfortable drive from the coastal city of Aktau. The road, recently built, offered a smooth ride through the steppe, where travelers can encounter hundreds of camels, a unique sight not found in other parts of Kazakhstan.
As the journey progresses, the scenery transforms, with the landscape resembling a cake known as ‘tiramisu’ by locals. The colors shift from brown to yellow to pink, creating a visual treat for visitors. And then, suddenly, the Mars-like landscape of Bozzhyra emerges, with huge white limestone formations rising from the ground. These geological wonders were once part of the ancient Tethys Ocean, now standing as a testament to the passage of time.
One of the most iconic features of Bozzhyra is the Azu Tisteri, towering limestone spires that reach nearly 200 meters into the sky. These “fangs,” as they are known in Kazakh, have become synonymous with the beauty of Bozzhyra, attracting travelers from around the world.
For those seeking the ultimate vantage point, Yerkinbayev recommends heading to the plateau above the valley, offering a stunning panoramic view of the surreal landscape below. The journey to Bozzhyra is an adventure in itself, with the nearest city of Aktau being a 300-kilometer drive away.
Yerkinbayev believes that there is no place quite like Bozzhyra in the world, making it a must-visit destination for nature lovers and adventurers alike. To learn more about this hidden gem, watch the full interview on The Astana Times YouTube channel.
