Holguin’s Reappointment: Tatar Calls it a Step Towards a New Era

President Ersin Tatar Welcomes Appointment of Maria Angela Holguin as Personal Representative for Cyprus
In a recent development regarding the ongoing dialogue about Cyprus, President Ersin Tatar expressed optimism over the re-appointment of Maria Angela Holguin as a personal representative of the United Nations Secretary-General. Tatar hailed this move as indicative of a positive shift in the diplomatic landscape surrounding the island’s long-standing division.
During an extended meeting held in Geneva on March 17-18, Tatar commented on Holguin’s previous experience, noting that she had previously served in this role from January to July 2024. Following her initial term, Holguin presented her findings to Secretary-General António Guterres, who referenced her report during discussions with both Cypriot leaders in October.
In her renewed capacity, Holguin is tasked with paving the way for a second meeting aimed at fostering cooperation among the involved parties. This crucial dialogue is scheduled for the end of July, building on discussions initiated in Geneva earlier this year.
President Tatar emphasized the Turkish Cypriot side’s commitment to advancing the dialogue process in a constructive manner, underscoring the importance of recognizing the equal status of all parties involved. "It is essential that we proceed with a result-oriented understanding based on the realities of the situation," he stated, as he continues to advocate for meaningful engagement in the quest for peace and resolution in Cyprus.
The return of Holguin to this pivotal role represents an important opportunity for renewed discussions, with hopes that it will lead to a breakthrough in the long-standing issue affecting the island and its inhabitants.
