Houthis Accuse USA and England of Attacking Hodeidah Airport
US and UK Warplanes Bomb Hudaydah Airport in Yemen
According to reports from the Houthi-affiliated Al-Mesira television, US and UK warplanes conducted three bombardments on Hudaydah Airport. The news did not provide any details about the extent of the damage caused by the attacks, and there has been no official statement from the USA and the UK regarding the incident.
Hudaydah Airport, situated on the west coast of Yemen, used to operate both domestic and international flights before the outbreak of the civil war between the Yemeni government and the Houthis. However, the airport is currently not in service due to the ongoing conflict.
The Houthis stated that a total of 13 attacks were carried out by the USA and the UK on the city of Hudaydah on March 11. The coastal city of Hudaydah is significant as it houses an airport and three important ports.
The situation in the Red Sea has also escalated due to the actions of the Houthis, who have been seizing commercial ships they claim are affiliated with Israeli companies since October 31, 2023. This was in response to Israel’s attacks in Gaza. The Houthis have been using unmanned aerial vehicles and missiles to attack some of these ships.
In response to these threats, a multinational maritime task force called “Operation Welfare Guardian” was established on December 18, 2023, involving several countries to ensure the security of global maritime trade. US forces have intercepted missiles and kamikaze drones launched from Yemen multiple times in recent months.
The European Union launched the Aspides mission on February 19 to enhance navigation safety in the Red Sea. Italy later joined this mission on March 5 and took over tactical command. The Suez Canal, connecting the Mediterranean to the Red Sea, plays a crucial role in global trade, with approximately 12% of global trade passing through it, providing the shortest route between Europe and Asia.
