How the Ukraine War Caused Multiple Crises in Energy, Food Security and the Economy

Hungary’s Foreign Minister, Péter Szijjártó, last week warned that the ongoing war in Ukraine is causing a “triple” crisis in Europe, impacting energy, food security and economics. Stressing that the only long-term solution was a peaceful resolution, Szijjártó warned that, to date, Brussels had only made matters worse. Highlighting UN data showing 94 countries had been hit by at least two of the three crises, Szijjártó warned that unless action was taken, the food crisis could lead to an increase in terrorism and migration. He criticised Brussels’ reaction to the “triple crisis”, highlighting the decision to restrict the importing of energy and impose sanctions on nuclear power. Meanwhile, Ukrainian exports of grain to Africa and the Middle East have been hampered by conflicts in distribution, costing eastern European farmers.
