A Moldovan man has been apprehended by the police after crashing a minivan filled with illegal migrants near Mátraszőlős last Thursday. The Nográd County Prosecutor’s Office stated on Friday that seven individuals were injured in the accident. The man is currently being investigated for human trafficking and causing a road accident.
The incident occurred in the early hours of October 5. The 40-year-old suspect was driving a van registered in Poland and transporting 12 people who claimed to be Syrian migrants from the Serbia-Hungary border towards Slovakia. Disturbingly, the van had no seats, windows, or air vents, highlighting the dangerous conditions these individuals were subjected to.
Authorities became aware of the van’s presence on highway 21 near Mátraszőlős, located northeast of Budapest. When the police attempted to approach the vehicle, the driver tried to flee. Reaching speeds of approximately 180km/h, the van ultimately crashed into a barrier and careened into a roadside drainage ditch. However, the perpetrator’s attempt to escape was unsuccessful, as the police managed to apprehend him before he could evade capture.
Of the seven individuals injured in the crash, one is reported to have sustained severe injuries. This incident serves as a reminder of the risks and dangers faced by migrants who are often exploited by human traffickers who profit from their vulnerability.
