Humans Urged to Kill Invasive Python on Sight after Live Prey Attack
Florida’s Everglades National Park is known for its diverse wildlife, including alligators, crocodiles, and pythons. It was here that one woman got more than she bargained for during a routine bike ride.
Alison Joslyn, a performance athlete who regularly takes long-distance bike rides, was shocked to stumble upon a fight between a crocodile and a python. She managed to capture the intense battle on camera, with the crocodile ultimately emerging victorious by killing the massive snake with its powerful jaws.
Sharing the footage of the encounter, Alison remarked, “One less python terrorizing the Everglades.” She also speculated that the crocodile may have been tired and weakened due to the cold weather and the intense fight with the python.
While alligators are native to Florida, pythons are considered an invasive species in the region. The presence of these non-venomous snakes has led to a decrease in the population of many native animals, posing a threat to the region’s wildlife. In fact, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission has recommended that python snakes be killed on sight.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the impact of invasive species on ecosystems and the efforts needed to manage their populations. As Florida continues to grapple with the issue of invasive pythons, encounters like the one captured by Alison serve as a poignant reminder of the complex relationship between native and non-native species in the region’s delicate ecosystem.
