Hungarian Astronauts Train in Houston for SpaceX Mission

Two Hungarian Astronaut Candidates Prepare for Ax-4 Mission in Houston

Tibor Kapu and Gyula Cserényi, two candidates of the HUNOR astronaut program, are currently undergoing intensive training for the upcoming Ax-4 mission at the Axiom Space base in Houston. The two astronauts recently gave a video interview to Kossuth Radio, providing insights into their preparations and daily routines.

As reported by Hungary Today, the entire crew of the Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4) arrived in Houston in early August to commence training under the guidance of veteran astronaut Peggy Whitson. The mission, initially scheduled for launch next spring, has faced delays due to necessary interagency approval processes.

During the interview, Gyula Cserényi, the reserve astronaut, explained that their training is being conducted by three institutions: NASA, Axiom, and SpaceX. While NASA focuses on preparing them for life on the space station, SpaceX is responsible for the launch operation, and Axiom manages the mission’s other tasks.

One of the most challenging aspects of their training, as emphasized by Tibor Kapu, is the need to relearn simple daily tasks such as eating and sleeping in a zero-gravity environment. Even basic activities like cleaning and vacuuming require meticulous attention to detail, with every step carefully planned to ensure the astronauts’ safety and comfort.

On the space station, maintaining essential living conditions becomes crucial, as the crew must create a suitable airflow to regulate temperature and ensure proper ventilation. Additionally, the astronauts must adjust to a specialized diet provided by NASA, with each dish meticulously tested and approved before the mission.

The Ax-4 mission crew, which includes astronauts from the United States, India, Poland, and Hungary, is led by Commander Peggy Whitson, a highly experienced astronaut with multiple space missions under her belt. The team is expected to spend 14 days aboard the International Space Station, conducting various experiments and tasks to further space research and exploration.

As they continue their rigorous training schedule, both Cserényi and Kapu remain focused on their preparations for the upcoming mission, which will launch from Florida on SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket. With a strong commitment to excellence and a dedication to their mission, these Hungarian astronaut candidates are ready to embark on a historic journey to space.
