Hungarian Astronauts Trained in Isolation with Sleep Deprivation and Math Challenges
Hungarian astronaut candidates have recently undergone rigorous training to prepare for potential missions to the International Space Station. Orsolya Ferencz, Ministerial Commissioner for Space Research in Hungary, shared insights into the training process and Hungary’s role in the space industry.
In an interview with Index, Ferencz discussed the challenges faced by Hungarian astronaut candidates during their training. She highlighted a six-day test developed by Semmelweis University and the Counter-Terrorism Centre, where candidates were evaluated on their physical and mental stamina while enduring a stressful environment simulating life on the International Space Station.
The Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade has been overseeing the country’s space programme since 2018. Ferencz emphasized the importance of bilateral and multilateral agreements for Hungary to establish itself as a key player in the space industry. She noted that while Hungary may not be a major space power, the country aims to collaborate with European partners to contribute to scientific missions and research.
Furthermore, Ferencz addressed Hungary’s ambitions to participate in European space missions and emphasized the need for financial backing to support these endeavors. The budget for space research in Hungary was EUR 5.1 million in 2018, but the budget for ESA programmes alone is expected to reach EUR 32 million by 2024.
Looking ahead, Ferencz expressed her hopes to address EU space regulation during Hungary’s EU presidency. She stressed the importance of European cooperation in space exploration and highlighted the potential for the space industry to provide career opportunities for future generations.
In Hungary, the HUNOR Programme plays a crucial role in the selection and training of future astronauts. Collaborating with organizations such as the European Space Agency, NASA, and the Hungarian Defence Forces, HUNOR is paving the way for Hungarian astronauts to venture into space exploration.
As Hungarian astronauts prepare for potential missions to the International Space Station, the country is positioning itself to play a more significant role in the global space industry. With a focus on collaboration, innovation, and training, Hungary is poised to make its mark in the next frontier of space exploration.
