Hungarian Astronomer’s Discovery: Two Locals Uncover Large Asteroid Chunk

Hungarian Researchers Discover Meteorite Fragments of Predicted Asteroid Impact

A meteorite fragment from the asteroid whose impact was predicted by Hungarian astronomer Krisztián Sárnecky on 21 January has been found by Hungarian searchers. This comes after Sárnecky became the first scientist to detect the asteroid as it sped towards Earth and immediately shared the information with his German and Czech colleagues.

The first meteorite piece was found by professional Polish searchers and now, another piece, believed to be from 2024BX1, has been discovered by Hungarian researchers Zoltán Balla and Bence Gucsik. The 114-gram specimen was found after only an hour of searching.

Preliminary information from the Hungarian Meteoritical Society suggests that the meteorite could be polymict eucrite or howardite, possibly aubrite. If confirmed, the meteorite could be worth a lot to collectors.

Videos and images of the impact have been shared on social media, providing fascinating views of the asteroid entering the Earth’s atmosphere in Prague and Berlin.

The discovery of the meteorite fragments has generated significant interest and excitement in the scientific community and among collectors. It serves as a reminder of the ongoing importance of tracking and studying celestial objects and their potential impacts on Earth.
