Hungarian Cinema Takes the Spotlight at Los Angeles Film Festival

The 21st Hungarian Film Festival of Los Angeles is set to begin with a gala screening of the film “Semmelweis,” directed by Lajos Koltai. Koltai will also be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his work. The five-day festival will showcase a total of 19 films, including Hungary’s official entry for the Academy Awards, “Four Souls of Coyote,” and “Golden Legends,” a documentary about Hungarian water polo stars.
The festival will take place at the Laemmle Monica Film Center in Los Angeles from October 27 to October 31. It will provide a platform for recent Hungarian films and offer audiences the opportunity to engage with Hungarian cinema.
The opening night will feature a screening of “Semmelweis,” with director Lajos Koltai and actress Katica Nagy present. The film, which premiered in New York earlier this week, tells the story of Ignaz Semmelweis, a Hungarian physician who made significant contributions to the field of obstetrics.
Another highlight of the festival will be the screening of Áron Gauder’s animated film “Four Souls of Coyote.” The film, which won the Jury Prize at the Annecy Animation Festival in France, explores Native American creation stories and addresses important contemporary issues.
In addition to these films, the festival will also showcase recent successful Hungarian films such as “Hadik, Six Weeks,” “We Started Together,” and Marcell Jankovics’ adaptation of “Add it.” Restored classics, including “Salamon&Stock Show” and “Budapest Tales,” will also be featured.
The 21st Hungarian Film Festival of Los Angeles will conclude with the screening of Tamás S. Zákonyi’s documentary “Golden Legends.” The film, which focuses on the achievements of the Hungarian national water polo team, highlights their unprecedented success of winning three consecutive Olympic gold medals.
Overall, the festival aims to celebrate Hungarian cinema and provide a platform for both established and emerging filmmakers. Audience members will have the opportunity to engage with a diverse range of films and gain insight into Hungarian culture and storytelling.
