Hungarian Duo to Lead EP Working Group on National Minorities

European Parliament’s Intergroup on Traditional Minorities, National Communities, and Languages Re-established

The European Parliament’s Intergroup on Traditional Minorities, National Communities, and Languages has been re-established with new leadership. Loránt Vincze, MEP of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ), was elected as the new chair, and Kinga Gál, Fidesz MEP, as the honorary chair.

Nearly 40 MEPs from all political groups in the European Parliament supported the continuation of the tasks of the EU working group on minorities. MEPs of the RMDSZ have been actively involved in the working group since Romania’s accession to the EU in 2007.

Kinga Gál, Fidesz MEP and vice-president of the Patriots for Europe group, who has been involved in the working group for two decades, was elected as the honorary chair on the proposal of Loránt Vincze.

Loránt Vincze, also the President of the Federal Union of European Nationalities (FUEN), expressed hope that his international experience in minority protection and his network of contacts through the Minority SafePack Initiative would enhance the effectiveness of the task force’s work.

In a statement, Loránt Vincze emphasized the importance of Europe paying attention to indigenous minorities and providing them with legal protection and support, especially concerning the Hungarian communities in Romania. Kinga Gál also stressed the need for better protection of Europe’s traditional national and linguistic minorities.

The re-established working group aims to keep the protection of Hungarian communities beyond the borders on the agenda of European institutions. Both Vincze and Gál are committed to working towards this goal and ensuring that the rights and interests of minority communities are upheld.

The cooperation between Vincze and Gál signals a renewed focus on advocating for the rights of traditional minorities and strengthening their legal protections within the European Union. Their experience and dedication to this cause highlight the continued efforts to safeguard the cultural and linguistic diversity present in Europe.
