Hungary’s EU Presidency Marks Historic Decisions Amid Political Challenges
Despite facing multiple crises and obstacles during its EU presidency, Hungary has successfully brought about historic decisions, according to János Bóka, the EU affairs minister. In a recent press conference, Bóka highlighted key achievements such as the Budapest Declaration aimed at enhancing the bloc’s competitiveness, the full Schengen membership of Romania and Bulgaria, and hosting significant summits in Budapest.
During Hungary’s presidency, a total of 39 formal council meetings were held in Brussels and Luxembourg, along with 14 informal ministerial meetings in Budapest. Notable agreements included political trialogue agreements in the European Parliament and the adoption of a council declaration against anti-Semitism. The presidency also oversaw important policy decisions in agriculture, justice, and home affairs.
Bóka emphasized the importance of the institutional transition to enable new EU leaders to start operating effectively. He praised Hungary for its role as a fair mediator and a strong political presidency that showcased the need for change and a real European alternative.
Looking ahead, Bóka called on the current Polish EU Presidency to build on Hungary’s initiatives while expressing concerns about Poland’s involvement in internal political conflicts. He stressed the need for member states, including Hungary, to push for necessary changes amidst upcoming political transitions.
Regarding the EU’s common security and defence policy, a permanent team was established under Hungary’s presidency. While preparations for a common European defence industry concept fell short, Bóka expressed confidence in the Polish presidency to address this issue. He also addressed concerns about community funding for Hungary, noting that funds were being withheld for political reasons.
In response to questions about Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s peace mission in Ukraine, Bóka highlighted Orbán’s efforts towards securing a ceasefire and meaningful peace talks. He praised Orbán’s political courage and emphasized the positive results of the peace mission.
As the EU presidency is handed over to Poland, Bóka assured that Hungary’s granting of political asylum to a former Polish minister should not impact foreign relations. He clarified that the decision was based on procedural concerns and legal considerations.
