Hungarian EU Presidency Advocates for Change
Minister for European Affairs, János Bóka, stressed the need for fundamental change in the European Union during the 33rd Bálványos Summer University in Băile Tușnad, Romania. He highlighted the importance of the Hungarian EU Presidency in advocating for this change, particularly as the EU transitions to a new institutional cycle.
Bóka criticized the EU for providing inadequate responses in key areas such as competitiveness, cohesion, agricultural policy, and demographic challenges over the past five years. He pointed out two conflicting views on European integration: one that sees integration as a means for member states to collaborate while maintaining their identities, and another that views deepening integration as an end in itself.
The Minister called for a shift in approach towards focusing on the added value of integration. He emphasized the importance of accepting political conflicts responsibly while maintaining an honest broker role. Bóka stated that the success of the EU should be judged based on whether joint action brings added value that member states could not achieve individually.
MEP Loránt Vincze, of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania, criticized the European Commission for dismissing the Minority SafePack initiative and expressed concern over the lack of freedom of opinion within EU institutions. Historian Valentin Stan raised questions about current European conflicts, while MEP László Lóránt Keresztes highlighted the importance of European partnerships in areas like water management.
