Hungarian EU Presidency to Unveil European Competitiveness Pact
Hungary’s Minister of EU Affairs, János Bóka, has announced plans for a new European competitiveness pact during the 14th Infoparlament – Parliament of the Information Society conference. This initiative is set to be discussed at the upcoming informal European Council meeting in Hungary this November, with the aim of shaping the direction for the next five-year EU institutional cycle.
The Hungarian presidency, starting on July 1, will focus on boosting EU competitiveness. Minister Bóka revealed that a series of working group meetings and presidency events are scheduled, with a detailed program to be released on June 18. He emphasized the need to establish a new phase of cooperation post the European Parliament elections, utilizing the transition period to define essential strategies for the future.
Mr. Bóka highlighted the fragile geopolitical climate, citing ongoing tensions in various regions and the growing polarization between the United States and China. He stressed the declining competitiveness of the EU and the crucial role of the next four to five years in determining the EU’s global standing. The minister also criticized Europe’s current regulatory approach, advocating for policies focused on economic growth.
To enhance competitiveness, Minister Bóka called for reducing administrative burdens, setting realistic economic targets, completing the internal market, and developing infrastructure. These measures are deemed essential for improving the EU’s positioning on the global stage.
